Keeping your motivation high while trying to lose weight can be as difficult as losing the extra pounds. Very often, people start out very optimistic but over time see their enthusiasm diminish. Here are a few ideas on how you can keep your motivation high while losing weight.
1. Write It Down
Before starting your new weight loss journey, sit down and make a commitment to yourself. Evaluate your “why” for losing weight. Write all of this down in a journal. Include other things such as the type of exercise and activities you will do, your food plan, regular milestone dates for how much weight you want to lose. Write in your journal daily and remind yourself of why you started in the first place.
2. Set Realistic Goals
Very often, people start dieting by declaring to themselves that they are going to lose it all in a very short period of time. Never make unrealistic, long term goals, rather, set short term, achievable goals that are easier to meet. Create specific, realistic goals for yourself and don’t beat yourself up if you happen to miss one of them.
3. The Buddy System
Many people who have successfully lost weight will tell you that they did it with the help of others. They either had friends or family who they were accountable to, or they had weight loss buddies who joined them in their plan. There are also many weight loss support groups available where you can find like-minded people who are going through what you are.
4. Select the Best Weight Loss Program
There are so many weight loss programs out there nowadays it’s very hard to choose the right or best one for your needs. Generally speaking, practically any of the weight loss programs advertised will help you lose weight if you stick with it. The problem is finding a legitimate plan and not a fad that may have risky elements. Speak with your physician or health care provider before starting any weight loss program. You do not want to become discouraged just because the plan you started failed to live up to its claims.
5. Keep Exercise Interesting
Those who have been successful with weight loss typically did so by adding exercise to their plan. Exercise will not only tone your body, but speed up your weight loss as well. You’ll have more energy and feel less stressed, all of which will help you feel motivated to keep going. How do you stay interested in exercising? If you walk, then change up your walking location. Try swimming, or dancing. Get yourself some fun exercise clothing or find a friend to workout with.
Regardless of the program you choose or the exercises you do to lose weight, remember to take care of yourself, keep your goals realistic and find a support system to help you along the way. Staying motivated will help you achieve the weight loss you desire and you’ll soon look and feel healthy.
